Distinguished and Famous people from Alphington
Alphington has been a home and working environment for visual artists and musicians. These connections include a painter's studio and a songwriter's childhood.
🎨 Rick Amor
Painter and printmaker Rick Amor bought a house in Alphington in 1993 and moved there the following year. His studio became the setting for works including The Room, giving a private local space a place in his art. His wider career includes portraits and service as an official Australian war artist in East Timor in 1999. The Alphington connection is therefore both residential and creative: rooms close to home sit alongside subjects encountered much farther away.
🎵 Angie McMahon
Singer-songwriter Angie McMahon grew up in Alphington, learning piano, singing in choirs and playing trumpet in a school band before teaching herself guitar. She won the Telstra Road to Discovery competition in 2013 and supported Bon Jovi, an unusually large stage for an emerging performer. Her debut single Slow Mover arrived in 2017. Those early musical experiences show a career developing through several instruments and settings before her own songwriting reached a wider audience.
🏫 Sam Papasavas
Sam Papasavas helped negotiate the purchase of the Parade College campus at Alphington in August 1987, working with the board of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria. The property eventually became Alphington Grammar School. A solicitor and community organiser, Papasavas also helped establish the Antipodes cultural festival with Don Dunstan that year. His public work ranged from education and Greek community organisations to the administration of national soccer. At Alphington, that broad community involvement produced a particularly tangible result: an existing campus acquired for a school, extending his efforts beyond festivals and football grounds into the classroom.
