Alphington Visitor Information
Bounded by the Darebin Creek to the east and the Yarra River to the south, Alphington is a suburb in the metropolitan city of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria. Primarily a residential area, this suburb is located about seven kilometres north-east of the Melbourne Central Business District (8.8 kilometres, or 20 minutes, by road). This well-known suburb is named after Alphington Village in the city of Exeter, in Devon, England. Its estimated population of 4,483 people has established residence in the suburb's total land area of 2.3 square kilometres.
While it used to be part of the City of Northcote, the suburb of Alphington is now shared by the Local Government Areas of the Cities of Darebin and Yarra. It remains part of the State District of Northcote (an electoral district in the Victorian Legislative Assembly), as well as the Federal Division of Batman (an Australian Electoral Division named after John Batman, one of the founders Melbourne). Its surrounding suburbs are Fairfield, Ivanhoe, Kew, Kew East, and Thornbury.
Alphington has suitable provisions for sports and recreation. Local sports clubs include the Alphington Junior Football Club, Latrobe Golf Club, and Parkside Football Club (an Australian Rules football team affiliated with the Northern Football League). The suburb's better known "green locales" are Alphington Park, the Darebin Parklands, and Pitcher Park (home of the Parkside Football Club).
